SUMMARY:6th Annual Underachievers Race Presented by Toyota of Laramie
DESCRIPTION:This is not your typical race… \nRacers can run\, walk\, crawl\, or use any form of non-motorized transportation to compete in an untimed .5k – note the decimal… this race is total of about 500 yards. \nThe race begins and ends at the Washington Park basketball court and race start time is 10am-ish \nCostumes are encouraged and there will be prizes for the best costume and best team costume. \nDonuts and coffee will be available for racers to refuel at the halfway point\, and racers receive a beer at the finish line to celebrate completing the race! \nWe have games along the race course as well!  We’ve put our own spin on some classic yard games but we make them very simple as we don’t want our racers to have to work too hard. \nThe best part is it’s all for charity!  Proceeds from racer registrations will be donated to The Downtown Clinic.

DESCRIPTION:Thursday\, October 5\, 7:30 p.m. Concert\, BCPA Concert Hall \nAh\, opening night: tuxedos\, long gowns\, diamond necklaces\, champagne in tall\, elegant glasses… Oh\, wait. That’s the NY Metropolitan Opera. \nBut in Laramie\, opening night at the symphony is just as special. It’s been months since you heard the orchestra\, and months since they could play for you. Everyone is excited! \nUW Symphony conductor Michael Griffith’s first downbeat will start Wagner’s Meistersinger Overture. It’s a powerful\, massive\, and yet achingly beautiful piece of music. What an exciting way to start the season. \nDr. Griffith named the concert after the orchestra’s next work: the Symphony No. 94\, nicknamed the Surprise Symphony\, by Franz Joseph Haydn. Haydn was decades earlier than Wagner\, part of the “Classical Era” of music history\, while Wagner was firmly in the “Romantic Era.” As such\, the orchestra is smaller\, the sound clearer and more immediate. It’s exciting\, occasionally humorous\, and sometimes elegant. It’s up to you to research the nickname – no spoilers here. Or let yourself be surprised! \nAfter intermission they’ll do a brief curtain-raiser: the “Procession of Nobles” from Rimsky-Korsakov’s Mlada. As the title suggests\, it’s a stately entry march\, full of brass fanfares and powerful 19th Century Russian fire. \nThen comes the big piece: the world premiere of The Point for Jazz Piano Trio and Orchestra. This is a full three-movement concerto\, but with decidedly jazz-influenced rhythms and harmonies. UW’s incredible faculty jazz trio\, Live Edge\, are the soloists.
