Deerwood Ranch Wild Horses will open its gates to the public on Saturday, September 26, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., offering visitors a rare opportunity to see more than 350 Wyoming Bureau of Land Management wild horses living on the private ranch in the Centennial Valley west of Laramie.

The Deerwood Ranch Wild Horses Fall Open Day is free to attend, and no reservations are required. The ranch is located approximately 30 miles west of Laramie, with activities centered around its Hay Barn/Wedding and Events Barn.

Free pickup tours will take visitors through the ranch to view the wild horses throughout the day. Tours begin at 9:30 a.m. and depart every half hour, with the final tour leaving at 2 p.m.

Representatives from the Bureau of Land Management will be on site to answer questions about wild horses and burros and to assist with and approve adoption applications. Non-gentled BLM Mustang yearlings and two-year-old geldings will be available for adoption, along with burros.

Visitors will also have an opportunity to meet adopted BLM Mustangs from Rocket G Ranch and see the progress the horses have made since adoption. Their presence offers prospective adopters a look at what can be accomplished when everyday horse owners choose to work with a wild Mustang.

From 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., Dave Herring and crew will serve smoked-meat sandwiches and sides, with proceeds benefiting the Shawn Herring Memorial Foundation. Cash is encouraged. Quick Draw Coffee will also return to the event with a selection of drinks.

The Open Day will feature several local vendors selling items including wild horse photography and notecards, T-shirts and sweatshirts, jewelry, hides, home décor, baked goods, local raw honey, sourdough products, handmade bowls and baskets, and other gifts. Organizers describe the gathering as having a relaxed farmers market and arts-fair atmosphere surrounded by the fall scenery of the Centennial Valley.

Deerwood Ranch is a private ranch caring for more than 350 BLM wild horses and has regularly welcomed the public through special Open Day events designed to give visitors a closer look at Wyoming’s wild horses and the people involved in their care and adoption.
